What’s happening at Norton Growing Space?
This page will tell you about projects happening in the field at the moment…- if you would like to know more about Norton Growing Space in general click here.
The start of the Community Orchard..
In March we planted the start of the community orchard. A number of the trees are Gloucestershire heritage apple and plum varieties, along with pear and cherry. The trees produce will be for the members of the garden to share. We have used cactus guards to protect them temporarily while we wait for a deer and rabbit proof perimeter fence to be installed. Once the fence is up we will then plant more trees around the growing space.
1000 Seeds Project
The first growing bed in our field is a community crop planted by local primary schools. After a successful grant application to the Coronation Living Heritage Fund via Tewkesbury Borough Council. 1000 seeds have been sown: sweetcorn, french climbing beans, squashes and sunflowers. They will grow as a companion crop with the beans using the sweetcorn as supports and the squashes giving ground-cover and enjoying shade underneath. The children will be invited to pick their crop in the late summer/autumn.
The volunteers have prepared six growing beds ready for the seedlings. The beds are no dig beds of well rotted horse manure and farm made compost. We have covered with sheep wool felt to keep the moisture in - the seedlings will be planted through the felt while still in their cardboard pots.
